That first day of
school
spinning with excitement and
butterflies? As a small child,
your stomach was full of you
butterflies? As a small child,
you waited anxiously for that
big day, only to wake up to
unsure feelings about school.
frightening thoughts and
unsure feelings about school.
Green Valley Schools wants to
help you and your child get
past the scary part and on to
many productive and rewarding
days of school.
Things to know
Your child will feel more
comfortable in school if he or
she can take care of basic
personal needs, such as:
PREPARING KINDERGARTEN
SUTDENTS
For The First Day of School
* Tying shoes, putting on
and taking off outer
clothes without help
* Knowing first and last
name, parents' names,
address and telephone
number
* Using bathroom properly,
washing hands
* Keeping track of personal
property. Please put name
on your child's belongings
In addition, your child
should get plenty of sleep
before school. Usually, 10
to 12 hours is recommended
for children this age. Make
sure your child has a good
healthy diet, including a
good breakfast.

Making it a happy
experience
A "dress rehearsal" of
the first day of school
can make a big
difference. Your child
will feel more
comfortable if he or she
knows what to expect.
You can help your child
look forward to school by
talking about it in a
friendly way so your child
will think of it as a happy
place. Discuss school
activities, school friends,
new experiences and new
things to learn.
If your child expresses
doubts or fears, do not
pass them off. Try to
answer all the questions
in a positive, reassuring
way and let your child
know that there will be
friendly people to help of
those first uncertain
days. Your own reactions
an attitude will go a long
way toward determining
how your child feels
about school.
Homework for
parents
Once your child is in
school, he or she will
have some adjustments
to make.
Your child will be eating
with classmates in the
school. Teach your child
proper table manners and
how to behave in the
class. Encourage your
child to eat all foods so
that he or she will get a
well-balanced meal.
Your child will be riding the
school bus with schoolmates.
Teach your child how to Behave
properly on the school bus and
learn the rules for school bus
riders.
Twice a year a report will be
sent home with your child. A
parent meeting will follow and
your presence will be required
as to review with your child's
teacher your concerns about
your child at school.
In class, your child will be
learning to work along and work
with others, share and take
turns, explore and expand
abilities and interests, express
thoughts and ideas and listen to
others. There will be class
activities to build
self-confidence, develop
vocabulary, show differences in
sound, size, shape and color,
increase interest in books,
numbers and people, improve
coordination and introduce new
ideas.
If your child is ill, keep him
or her home from school. Be
alert to symptoms such as
upset stomach, runny nose,
fever or sore throat. Check
with your doctor for
diagnosis, treatment and
proper time for returning to
school. Please send a note
when your child returns,
explaining the reason for the
absence.
If your child becomes ill at
school, he or she should tell
the teacher, who may send
them to school nurse. The
school will call you if there
is an illness or injury that
requires treatment or if we
feel he or she should go home.
When it is necessary for
your child to take
medication at school, the
school nurse will do so with
parental permission. The
medication should be
contained in the original
prescription bottle with
your child's name, current
date, physician's name,
medication and dosage.

Keeping you informed
The school will keep you
informed of important
issues with written
reports, parent/teacher
conferences and meetings.
Please refer to the
student's handbook for
information concerning
procedures and regulations
by the school. This
information is important to
you and your child.
If you have any questions
or concerns, feel free to
call your child's school or
come by in person.
